The situation
GoodCourse needed content formats that compete with social media. Universities were losing students to TikTok-style content, and the initial Bubble build was desktop-only with broken video playback.
The existing Bubble app had been built without mobile in mind. Fixed-width groups, desktop-sized video players and no touch interactions. The product needed a complete responsive rebuild to work on the phones where students actually spend their time.
Bubble was the right platform because the course content needed constant updating by non-technical university staff. The visual editor and repeating groups made it possible for content managers to add lessons, quizzes and courses without developer involvement.
What we built
We rebuilt the Bubble app mobile-first — reworking every page for phone screens and adding the engagement features that keep students coming back.
Mobile-first responsive rebuild
Every page was restructured using Bubble's responsive engine. Video lessons display in vertical format on mobile. Touch-friendly quiz interfaces replace desktop-style radio buttons. The responsive groups, conditional visibility rules and mobile-specific layouts make the Bubble app feel like a native mobile experience.
Video lesson architecture
Lessons are under 90 seconds — short enough to watch between classes. Mux handles video hosting and adaptive streaming. The Bubble app manages lesson metadata, sequencing and progress tracking through custom data types. Repeating groups display lesson libraries with lazy loading to keep page performance tight.
Interactive quiz system
Each lesson ends with a quiz built as a multi-step Bubble flow using custom states. Answers are validated instantly with visual feedback. Quiz results link back to the lesson data type so students and instructors can track comprehension across an entire course.
Engagement and retention workflows
Progress streaks are tracked as Bubble data fields that update via backend workflows after each completed lesson. When a student's streak is at risk, a scheduled API workflow triggers an SMS reminder through Twilio. The nudge timing is configurable per university through an admin dashboard built in Bubble.
- Mobile-first responsive rebuild in Bubble's visual editor
- Vertical video lessons with Mux integration and progress tracking
- Interactive quiz system with instant feedback and comprehension tracking
- SMS retention nudges via Twilio scheduled through Bubble API workflows
The result
Adopted by 5 universities within 8 weeks. Completion rates are 3x higher than traditional LMS content. Students engage with the Bubble app on their phones between classes — exactly the behaviour the product was designed for.
University content managers add new courses and lessons through the Bubble editor without developer support. The engagement workflows run automatically — streak tracking, reminders and progress reports all handled by scheduled Bubble API workflows.
